歌曲改编自1925年由作曲家鲍里斯·福明和诗人康斯坦丁·波德列夫斯基共同创作的俄罗斯民谣《路漫漫》（Дорогойдлинною）。英文歌词版本的《Those were the days》，词作者是基尼·拉斯金（Gene Raskin ）。
因为《Those were the days》的广为传颂，《路漫漫》也得以在世界范围内变得家喻户晓起来。而这一切都要归功于著名的“苹果工作室”。
1968年，《路漫漫》这首抒情歌曲引起甲壳虫乐队成员保罗·麦卡特尼的注意，在他的建议下，歌星玛丽·霍普金就在“苹果工作室”里录制了这首歌的英文版，也就是《Those were the days》。
